Good Afternoon All & Happy Tuesday!
Happy Birthday wishes go to friends Valerie in Spokane (who is 66 today) and Emily in Florida (who turns 41 today)! Here’s to you two on your special day of celebration! Happy Birthday also to actress Arlene Dahl, who is 95 today; to computer genius and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, who turns 70 today; to wrestler and actor Hulk Hogan, who is 67 today; and to actor Chris Hemsworth, who turns 37 today. Here’s to all of you, too!
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining my friend Julie, my wife Judy and my son, Jake for nine holes of golf at one of the best courses in my known Universe, Downriver Golf Course in Spokane. We teed off late in the afternoon under perfect conditions…who could ask for anything more (except better golf scores)! Judy & Julie hit the ball consistently “down the middle” while the guys were off to the right and then off to the left and vice versa (a guidance control malfunction…no, make that “operator error”! Jake and I were lucky enough to birdie the last hole…making us want to come back for more. That’s what’s great about golf…it only takes one good shot to make you want to come back and play again, no matter what happened before or after that!
This October marks another “Walk To End Alzheimer’s” event. This year it’s a “virtual” walk, but the goal remains the same…to end the scourge of Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias in our lifetime so that future generations don’t have to go through the suffering and losses surrounding these awful diseases. “Team Charlie263” will be participating again in honor of my father, Don Newbold, and our family friend, Jane Franks, who both died of Alzheimer’s Disease. Jane was a gifted teacher, spouse & mother who left this Earth far too soon, having suffered with early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease for many years. We’d love to have you join our team. Please go to www.act.alz.org/spokane and find “Team Charlie263” and sign up to be a part of our team. You’ll be glad you did!
Here is the word definition for the day:
Rumbustious (Rum-bus-chew-us): A late 18th century English word meaning “Boisterous or unruly.” Like Seattle Mariners’ fans get when our team finally wins a game or what my oldest daughter’s dog, Lucy, gets when you come through her front door!
Here are some thoughts for the day:
“You know, if you really want to fiddle the old-time way, you’ve got to learn the dance. The contra-dance hoedowns. It’s all in the rhythm of the bow. The great North Carolina fiddle player, Tommy Jarrell says that “If a feller can’t bow, he’ll never make a fiddler. He might make a violin player, but he’ll never make no fiddler.”
“The grand old lady of bluegrass? Well, wouldn’t that be a wonderful title to have? I hope I do enough to earn it some day.”
—Alison Krauss, American singer, songwriter and fiddler of “Alison Krauss & Union Station” fame
“I see a good deal of talk from Washington about lowering the taxes. I hope they do get ’em lowered down enough so people can afford to pay ’em.”
“The United States Senate opens with a prayer and closes with an investigation.”
—Will Rogers, American humorist, comedian and favorite son of Oklahoma (and the United States, for that matter!)
Here’s to a great Tuesday and lots of love & good wishes always! Stay safe…stay strong…and enjoy the sunshine!
Press on,
Papa ‘a (Dad, Uncle Mark, Mark, etc.)
