Thoughts For The Day From Papa ‘a

Good Morning All & Happy Monday!

Today marks the birthday of one of the finest people you’ll ever have the pleasure of meeting in this world…my beloved “sister” (sister-in-law) Mary McIntosh.  Happy Birthday to you, Mary!  Here’s to you on your special day of celebration!

Although I never had a sister of my own, I couldn’t have asked for a better sister than Mary.  She’s a lovely woman, inside and out…fiercely loyal, has a servant’s heart, and is truly devoted to her family and friends.  “Aunt Mary” is something special, for sure.

Have fun today, Mary!  All of your family will be celebrating the day you came into this world of ours.

Speaking of birthday celebrations, here’s to my friend Tina in Spokane, mother & health care worker extraordinaire; to my friend Nathan in Boise, Idaho; to my childhood friend and high school classmate (part of the “Amazing Class of ’73”), cheerleader and attorney extraordinaire, Sarah; and to mi amigo Eduardo in Buenos Aries (his 50th birthday!), son and mural painter extraordinaire…all of whom celebrate their birthdays today.  Here’s to all of you!

I don’t know about you, but this year’s Easter Day was wonderfully weird.  Our family all gathered at my daughter Andy’s home to exchange favorite dishes…it was kind of like a “drive by Easter dinner.”  We converged on Andy’s place, picked up our dinners, gave each other “foot bumps” and told each other how much we loved each other and then went our separate ways.  The food was delicious, but there was something missing…not being able to gather together to celebrate Jesus and to enjoy each other’s company.  I’m looking forward to a “coronavirus-free” Easter next year, for sure!

I happened upon the 1969 Topps Football Card for Herb Adderley, former Green Bay Packer & Dallas Cowboy great.  His card says that Herb was “Green Bay’s first draft choice in 1961.  Herb turned out to be an excellent selection.  The athlete has turned into one of the best defensive backs in professional football.  Herb holds an NFL record, having scored six TDs on interceptions (that record stood for quite some time—it was broken just recently by Charles Woodson.  Herb is one of only four players in NFL history to play on six championship teams.  He played in four Super Bowls and his team won 3 out of 4 of them!  He was a star halfback with Michigan State in college (under legendary coach Duffy Daugherty), but switched to defense due to the fact that the Packers had two future Hall of Famers in the backfield at that time…Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor.  He finished his NFL career as part of the “Doomsday Defense” with the Dallas Cowboys.  Herb was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.  After his football playing career, Herb returned to his hometown of Philadelphia (he was born there in 1939 and coached at Temple University and then with the Philadelphia Bell of the World Football League, whose head coach was fellow Green Bay Packer teammate Willie Wood.  Here’s to Herb Adderley and all of the great Green Bay Packer teams of the 1960s!

Here is the fact for the day:

Your taste buds are replaced every 10 days.

Here is the word definition for the day:

Transpicuous (Trans-PIK-yoo-us):  “Transparent”…”Easily understood, lucid.”  Wouldn’t it be grand if all of us could communicate “transpicuously” with one another!

Here is the thought for the day:

“Observe good faith and justice towards all nations; cultivate peace and harmony with all—in the execution of such a plan, nothing is more essential than that permanent, inveterate antipathies against particular nations, and passionate attachments for others, should be excluded; and that, in place of them, just and amicable feelings towards all should be cultivated.”

—President George Washington, “Farewell Address of 1796”

Here’s to a great Monday and lots of love and good wishes always!

Press on,

Papa ‘a (Dad, Uncle Mark, Mark, etc.)
