Thoughts For The Day From Papa ‘a

Good Morning & Happy Sunday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GORDON LIGHTFOOT!  Here’s to you, Gordon, for all of the great music over the years!  One of the best singers/songwriters, for sure.  Have fun on your special day of celebration on your 81st birthday!  And, as you are fond of saying…”Press On”!

Happy Birthday wishes also go to actor/director Danny DeVito of “Twins” movie fame and “Taxi” T.V. fame, who is 77 today; and to Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels who turns 75 today.  Here’s to both of you!  And here’s to childhood friend, Susan in Olympia; and to Olympia High School classmate Steve, who celebrate their birthdays tomorrow (November 18th) and to long-time friend Ardythe, who celebrates her 94th birthday and dear friend and husband, father, grandfather, master swimmer and physician extraordinaire Steve, who celebrate their birthdays this coming Tuesday (November!  Here’s to all of you too!

I learned today that long-time insurance professional and friend of our family, Barry Jones, died recently at age 86.  Barry contributed so much to the insurance industry and devoted many hours to bettering our community.  He was a Washington State University Cougar fan extraordinaire!  He built a successful business and raised a great family.  He will be missed by many!  Here’s to you, Barry, for all you’ve done and a life well lived!

Another list included in the “Notes of the Notables” in the October 26-27, 2019 edition of “The Wall Street Journal” is one connected with legendary film director George Lucas of “Star Wars” fame.  It is a list of alternate titles for the film “American Graffiti” by studio heads at Universal Studios who funded it.  They asked Lucas to consider a number of different titles including “High School’s Over,” “1962 Was Some Year,” “The Fast and the Deadly,” “Cherry Coke Summer” and perhaps the worst of the worst…”Goodbye Burger City.”  Lucas stuck to his guns and “American Graffiti” hauled in $115 million in 1973 dollars, earning him two Oscar nominations and opened the door for him to create the legendary “Star Wars” movie series…

Here’s the word for the day:

Trenchant:  “Being sharp, intense, and forceful…”Characterized by energy and effectiveness”… (This is one of those words that have multiple and varied meanings and can be used in different ways and different situations, it seems!)

Here are some thoughts for the day:

“You have to create something from nothing.”

—Ralph Lauren, American fashion designer

“Harmony, oh harmony…Where are you tonight, where are you tonight?

Harmony, oh harmony…Have you gone away, have you gone to stay?

If you pass me by, I will miss you…And if you can cry, I can cry too.

Harmony, oh harmony, where are you tonight, where are you tonight?

Harmony, sweet harmony, have you gone astray, have you gone away?

If you’d ask me why I miss you, it’s a part of my nature I guess

Oh harmony, sweet harmony…Oh where have you gone, harmony?….

—Gordon Lightfoot, “Harmony,” from the album “Harmony” (2004)

Here’s to a great Sunday & lots of love and good wishes always!

Press on,

Papa ‘a (Dad, Uncle Mark, etc.)
